Dear Church Family,

Have you ever lived in someone else’s shadow? Usually, we think of that as a bad thing, but in Psalm 91, we find out that this can be a very good thing. Usually, when we think of that expression, we think of it as being overlooked or unnoticed, but here it means something entirely different.

Psalm 91:1-2 (ESV)
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

This Psalm describes God’s protection, deliverance, and covering. As we go through life, it is important to know that we don’t go alone, but have a protector, deliverer, and refuge from the storms of life. The Psalms often speak of God as our “safe place” of shelter. This begs the question, “Where do you run to when the storms come?”

The reason the psalmist finds himself in the shadow of the Almighty, is that he has sought shelter under His wing. When he looks up, he is underneath the Lord’s protective hand. I’m not sure what storms you are facing today, but you can find shade under the shelter of the Lord.

One word stood out in verse one: abide. The best way to find shelter in the storm is to abide there before the storm. We often run to God when things get bad or when we’ve exhausted our other options. How much better would it be if we simply abided there all along? Isn’t that what Jesus calls us to do in John 15?

John 15:4-5 (ESV)
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

How do we abide in Him? The Lord describes this type of person at the end of Psalm 91. Let’s be those who hold fast to Him in love, know His name, and call on Him. Let us live in His shadow.

Psalm 91:14-16 (ESV)
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

What’s Happening at Gospel Life:

Sunday Evening Youth Group: All youth are invited to the Bronleewes’ house this Sunday, October 25th, from 5-7 pm. We’ll have dinner, games, worship, and continue our study through the book, A Case for Christ. This week we will go over chapter five. If you would like an audiobook version of the book, you can find it here:
https://tinyurl.com/case4christstudent
Operation Christmas Child: We are providing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. These provide gifts to children around the world who would not normally receive a gift for Christmas. More importantly, they share the Gospel with these children and their families. If you are interested in participating, please see Michelle McEnulty on Sunday morning for information on how you can help spread joy and God’s Word.

Elder Training: Our next training is on Tuesday, October 27th at 7 pm at the Bronleewes’ house. Please contact Pastor Dave if you have any questions or need a copy of the homework.

Communion: We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper as part of our Sunday morning service on Sunday, November 1st. Through the ordinance of communion, we remember the sacrifice Jesus made to save us from our sins, and look forward to His return.
