Dear Church Family,

Have you ever sought shelter during a storm? I remember, when we lived in Texas, hearing the tornado sirens in the middle of the night and heading to the central-most closet to wait out the storms. You’ve probably been caught out in the rain without an umbrella and searched for the nearest cover. I read Psalm 57 this morning and noticed David’s use of the imagery of seeking shelter from storms.

Psalm 57:1-3 (ESV)
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
till the storms of destruction pass by.
2 I cry out to God Most High,
to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
3 He will send from heaven and save me;
he will put to shame him who tramples on me. Selah
God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!

For David, his storms were from Saul and his men seeking to take his life. As he sought shelter in a cave from his pursuers, he wrote this Psalm. The storms of life take many shapes and form, from physical danger, to issues with our health, to financial cares, to relational difficulties, to uncertainty about the future, and the list goes on and on. The big question for us is, “Where do we seek shelter from these storms?”

People seek shelter in many places other than God. Some seek it through escape, by pursuing entertainment and pleasure, or drowning out worries through alcohol. Others seek shelter in other people or things, like a trusted friend or financial stability. Others trust in themselves, thinking they can weather and conquer the storms themselves. When storms hit, we typically have our go-to shelters. What is your default?

David rightly understood that safety wasn’t found in a cave, but in the care of God Most High, so he cried out to the Lord. Because of this, he is able to say, “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast!” (Psalm 57:7 ESV) It is not that his problems are so small, it is that His God is so great. His storm didn’t shrink, but he knew the strength of his shelter.

What storms are you facing right now? How can you take refuge in the Lord? Will you run to Him or to something else? As we seek Him in the storms of life, may we exclaim, along with David,

Psalm 57:11 (ESV)
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!
