Dear Church Family, Are you old enough to remember answering machines? When you called and were sent to the answering machine, you could leave your message, but had to wait and wonder when, or if, they would actually listen to it. In Psalm 22 David speaks of crying out to God and waiting for Him to answer.
Have you ever been in David’s situation before? It’s disheartening to pray to the Lord, but experience no reply. It is tempting to think that God isn’t at work when we do not hear from Him. We wonder if He received our message and when, or if, He will reply. It is important for us to know that God’s silence does not equate to His inactivity or lack of care. In fact, Jesus quotes this Psalm when He is upon the cross. We know that Jesus was exactly where He was meant to be, accomplishing the work the Father had entrusted to Him. The Father’s silence does not mean He was not at work. Sometimes God does His greatest work in the darkest and most quiet times. God was at work in both David’s and Jesus’ difficulties and He is at work in yours. Even when it feels like He is distant and inactive, Jesus reminds us that, “My Father is working until now, and I am working,” (John 5:12b). I don’t know what you’re facing or how long you’ve been crying out to God. Even when you don’t feel like it, continue to cry out to Him, trusting that He hears and He cares. No matter what happens, remember that He is at work for good.
