Dear Church Family, What does it mean to “run after” something? You’ve probably seen a dog run after a car or the runner at the end of a race, soley focused on the finish line. When we run after something, we are solely focused on it, intent on obtaining something from it. Today, in Psalm 16, David describes the people in the land running after other gods.
The people were looking to other gods for what could only be found in God. David refuses to join in their pursuit, committing not to drink offerings to those gods or take their names on his lips. What hit me was the word, “sorrow.” The people were trying to find meaning, purpose, protection, and joy in false gods. Instead of finding these things, they would only find sorrow. The same applies to us. It is tempting to look for life and security in things like money, possessions, pleasure, and power. Those things can never satisfy, because God alone was meant to provide those things. What are you running after? What gets you up in the morning, occupies your mind space throughout the day, and lingers on your mind at the end of it? You will only find sorrow if you are looking for true life in anything outside of God. Is there anything, outside of Him, that you are looking to for your ultimate life, joy, and pleasure? I love how David finishes the Psalm, finding those things in the Lord. Like David, may we run after God.
