Dear Church Family, Have you ever looked in on a situation and judged it incorrectly? Looks are not always as they seem. This is especially true in the Christian life, where the way God looks at things is often different than the way we look at things. David was a good example of this. When God sent Samuel to anoint David as king, He said to him, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7b). Today, I was reading in Luke 21, as Jesus and His disciples notice people putting gifts into the offering box. Luke 21:1-4 (ESV) Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” At first glance, it would seem that the poor widow gave next to nothing, while the rich gave large sums. Jesus sees things differently, though. In His mind, she gave more than all of them! Why does He have such a different perspective? She sacrificially gave everything she had, while they simply gave out of abundance. Jesus was moved by this woman’s sacrificial heart. This made me think of my heart; does God see that same kind of sacrificial heart in me? It comes down to more than money and how much we contribute into the offering box. God looks at our whole being and asks us to give our whole selves to Him. How can we, from the heart, devote our lives to Him, dedicating ourselves as living sacrifices?
