Dear Church Family, Do you like to volunteer or are you usually reluctant? Often, it depends on what we’re volunteering for. If it’s something amazing, then most of us would sign up, but if it’s something difficult or unknown, most of us would not. Today, I was reading in Isaiah 6. It’s one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. In it, Isaiah sees an amazing vision of God in His glory, with angels flying above Him and calling out to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is filled with his glory!” Isaiah is undone by this vision, as he comes to grips with God’s holiness and his own sin. As he confesses his sin, we see God’s grace and forgiveness, as one of the angels touches his mouth with a burning coal and declares his guilt taken away and sin atoned for. What hit me today was Isaiah’s response to all of this.
Why would Isaiah volunteer for an unknown assignment, which by the way, will end up being extremely difficult? Well, he has just seen God’s glory and knows that the Lord is worthy of anything and everything he could ever do. He is surely thankful for the forgiveness he has just received. He also knows that there is a need that he can fill. God is asking for a volunteer and Isaiah wants to be used by God. This made me think, “How would I respond, if I was in Isaiah’s position?” I often like to know what I’m getting into before I volunteer. I like to know when, where, how long, and what it will cost. Isaiah is so moved by his encounter with God that he doesn’t need to ask any of those questions. Because He knows who God is, he can trust God’s plan and wants to be part of it. Are we people who are willing to volunteer for God? I’m not asking for volunteers for any program at church. What I’m asking each one of us is, “Are we willing to place our whole lives in God’s hands?” Are we willing to say, “Here I am! Send me.” What is God calling you to? How would He like to use your life for His Kingdom and His glory? Are you willing to put everything on the altar and become a living sacrifice for Him?
