Dear Church Family,

Are you someone who likes to be in the know? It’s hard to not know what’s going on, especially when your life and future are directly affected by those things out of your control and outside your scope of knowledge. As I’ve been reading through Job, he’s faced incredibly difficult circumstances and has struggled with not knowing why they’ve occurred. He’s sought an audience with God, and today I finally came to the chapter where God speaks back. Interestingly, the Lord’s first words to Job reveal just how out of the loop Job has been.

Job 38:1-2 (ESV)
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
2 “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

In the end, Job has been trying to figure it all out, but with very limited knowledge. It’s hard for us to put ourselves in Job’s place, because, as we read, we know much more than Job. He wasn’t privilege to Satan’s interactions with the Lord. He didn’t know how highly the Lord spoke of him and His purpose in using him as a testimony against Satan. Job also doesn’t know the future, that God will bless him twofold in the end. If he knew all of this, things would make much more sense.

This reminds me just how limited we are in our knowledge of our own circumstances. We just like Job, often speak “words without knowledge.” What can we learn from Job? When things don’t make sense, don’t trust in your limited knowledge, but trust in the God who knows everything and controls all things. This takes faith and walking by faith pleases God. We need to remember how limited our knowledge is, and hold onto His Word, which will never change. What doesn’t make sense in your life right now? How does God’s Word speak to your circumstances? Remember, just like Job, there’s much you don’t know. Trust in and hold on to Him!

Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV)
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

What’s Happening at Gospel Life:

Read the Bible in a Year: Every year I present the challenge to the church of reading through the Bible in a year. The goal is knowing God more through His Word, not simply checking something off our list. If you read through the whole Bible this past year, we want to celebrate this with a special dinner. Please contact Pastor Dave in the next couple of weeks so we can place a date for the dinner. We’ have the same challenge for this new year. If you are looking for a reading plan, you can find one here:
https://biblereadingplangenerator.com/Elder Affirmation Vote: We will be voting to affirm Kevin Borror and Ted Point to serve as elders, during the morning worship service this Sunday, January 4th. Please read 1 Timothy 3:1-7 & Titus 1:5-9 for elder qualifications.

No Youth Group this Sunday: We’re taking one more Sunday off, but are excited to start back on Sunday, January 11th. We’ll see you then at the Bronleewes’ house for dinner, games, worship, and Bible study.

Church Potluck: Join us for our next church potluck on Sunday, January 11th, after the morning worship service. Please bring one of your favorite dishes to share with the group.

Elder Training: Our next training will be Tuesday, January 20th at 7 pm at the Bronleewes’ house. We’ll continue in 2 Timothy 2. Please contact Pastor Dave if you have any questions or need a copy of the homework for chapter 2.
