Dear Church Family,

What do you do when things don’t make sense? Sometimes we go through circumstances that we can’t make sense of. We don’t know why God doesn’t answer our prayers in a certain way and struggle to see how He is at work. As I read this morning in Job 13, I think this is where Job is at. He doesn’t understand why God has allowed all these bad things to happen. He’s listened to his friends. He’s sought answers and still doesn’t understand. In the beginning of the chapter, he even begs for a chance to argue his case before God.

Job 13:3 (ESV)
But I would speak to the Almighty,
and I desire to argue my case with God.

It’s natural to go through all these dynamics when our situations don’t make sense. We cry out to God, but don’t always get answers. We listen to godly counsel, but don’t always get clarity. We look inwardly and search for hidden sin that we need to confess. In all of this, though, do we still continue to trust in God, even though we don’t understand what He is doing? Do we believe there is a good answer because He is a good God, or do we give up and turn away? One amazing verse in this chapter and lesson from Job to us is found in verse 15.

Job 13:15 (ESV)
Though he slay me, I will hope in him;
yet I will argue my ways to his face.

What an amazing statement! Job both continues to trust God and seek for answers from Him. Even though he doesn’t understand, he doesn’t give up on God. May that be said of us. No matter what comes our way, let us continue to hope in Him and trust that He has good answers for the unsolved problems of our lives. Let us seek Him and walk forward in faith in the God who has proved Himself time and time again.

Psalm 111:7-8 (ESV)
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy;
8 they are established forever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
