Dear Church Family,

Do you ever feel like life doesn’t make sense. Sometimes we face confusing circumstances, good plans fall through, or unexpected difficulties come, seemingly out of nowhere. When these things happen, it’s natural to wonder where God is and how He is working these things out for good. I started reading through the book of Esther this week and see in it the powerful theme of God’s providence.

There are many reasons why Esther might wonder where God is in her story. She is living as an exile in a foreign land. She was raised by her cousin, Mordecai, “for she had neither father nor mother” (Esther 2:7 ESV). We don’t know all the details, but it would be very difficult to lose both of your parents. Even after the amazing circumstances God uses to bring her into the position of queen, He also allows a wicked man, Haman, to rise to power and bribe the king into sending out a decree to have her people annihilated. Despite this, we know God is at work. Why? We know how the book ends and that God is at work in the details of His story. It’s so much harder to see this in the middle, though, when we’re clouded by all the difficulties. Interestingly, right in the middle of the story, we see this:

Esther 4:14 (ESV)
“For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

These are the words of Mordecai as he tries to convince Esther to intervene on behalf of her people. It might cost her life to speak up to the king, but Mordecai actively wonders if this is not God’s providence in placing her in the right position at the right time. Phrased as a question, you can sense some level of uncertainty. He’s not sure of the outcome, but has to believe that God is at work and that He is in the details.

What circumstances are you facing that don’t make sense? What difficulties are you facing? It would be awesome to see ahead of time what God is going to do. You don’t have that privilege, but you know His proven character in the past. You can trust that He is at work, even in the details of your life, and that you are not here by accident. He is at work for good and wants to use you in some way to bring about that good. Trust Him. Cling to Him. Look for opportunities to do good. And wait patiently.
