Dear Church Family,

Have you ever become distracted? One time, I went to the grocery store to pick up an item, then noticed several other things we needed. I ended up going home with other things, but not the one thing I went for! Distractions can keep us from important things. In Nehemiah 6, all of the breaches in the wall have been filled in, with only the doors for the gates remaining. The enemies of Israel aren’t thrilled about this, and try to set up a meeting with Nehemiah, intending to harm him. I love Nehemiah’s response!

Nehemiah 6:2-4 (ESV)
Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to do me harm. 3 And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” 4 And they sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner.

Nehemiah refused to become distracted from the good work God called him to do. This makes me ask myself two questions. First, “What good works does God have for me?” We know that God has prepared good works for us (Eph. 2:10). If we’re to walk in them, we need to identify and commit to faithfully accomplish them. What has God called you to? Are you faithfully doing the right things?

Second, “Is there anything distracting me from that good work?” Distractions can come in nefarious forms, like the one from Sanballat and Geshem, or they can be seemingly innocent. Sometimes even good things can distract us from the better thing. Is there anything distracting you from the good works God has for you? How can you get back on track?

Let’s be like Nehemiah and be faithful to God’s calling on our lives, sticking to the right things and avoiding the distractions around us. Let us say, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?”

When: Sat., Nov. 1; 8 am – 5 pm
Where: Blue Lake, Cascade
Dress: coats, gloves, hiking shoes/boots
Transportation & fellowship: Meet at Pastor Dave’s house at 8 am to carpool; back to cars by 5 or 5:30 pm
Hike: 1.7 miles, elevation change – approx. 400 feet (~2 hrs including rest time)
Food & fellowship: Bring snacks to share; late lunch after the hike – burgers (probably) or pizza (less likely), graciously provided by the Drury family (~1 hr)
Topic“God’s driving passion – Am I on board?” We as believers enjoy tremendous blessings in Christ. But are we blessed just to be blessed? We’re going to talk about God’s passion for His glory in the nations and consider how we can join Him in His work.
The hike to Blue Lake from the Blue Lake trailhead near Cascade, Idaho is not mostly flat; it is a short but steep and rocky hike. While the descent to the lake is relatively easy, the return journey involves a significant climb back up, and the trail is described as rugged and uneven with a gradual decline in the middle.
  • Elevation change: The hike to the lake involves a descent of about 400 feet.
  • Terrain: The trail is rocky, with the steepest sections at the beginning and end.
  • Footwear and gear: Sturdy footwear is recommended, and some hikers find hiking poles helpful, especially for the climb back up.
  • Difficulty: It’s often rated as easy to moderate, but the climb back up requires saving energy.
Life Groups: If you’re interested in joining a life group, we have several to choose from. You can check them out here:
