Dear Church Family,

Are you a scheduled person? Some love to have every hour (or even minute) of their day planned out. Have you ever needed to add something to your schedule, and when you looked, there was only a minute or two to squeeze it in? Other times there are whole chunks of empty space and time isn’t as much of a concern. There are many things we need to fit into our busy schedules, and prayer should be one of the top priorities. We’re told in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to, “pray without ceasing.” We know that doesn’t mean that prayer must be the only thing on our calendar. So, how do we fit prayer into our busy schedules? I’ve started reading through Nehemiah and I think he gives us a great example in the first two chapters.

The book begins with Nehemiah in Babylon serving as a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes. At the beginning of chapter one, he receives sad news about the state of Jerusalem. Upon hearing this, he is overwhelmed and moved to pray to the Lord.

Nehemiah 1:4 (ESV)
As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

There are times to move everything else off the schedule and go before the Lord. Nehemiah was greatly concerned about the glory of God and the good of His people. This intense time of prayer surely had a huge effect on the events of the rest of the book. There are times when we need to do the same. It might be an important decision, a huge need, or a dire situation. We need to carve out time to go before God in desperation for Him to move. It’s also important for us to carve out regular time of prayer. Those extended times of prayer are vital, because there are other times when we must throw up a quick prayer right in the moment. This happens in chapter two.

Nehemiah 2:1-4 (ESV)
In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence. 2 And the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of the heart.” Then I was very much afraid. 3 I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ graves, lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” 4 Then the king said to me, “What are you requesting?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.

God gives an amazing opportunity to Nehemiah to make a request to the king. Right before answering, he prays a short prayer, then answers. God moves in the king’s heart and gives Nehemiah favor. There will be moments today when you need to do the same. You can’t pray for an hour. You need to pray in the middle of traffic or before a reply. Pray without ceasing. Use those big chunks and the short moments to make prayer a priority today.
