Dear Church Family, Have you ever felt hopeless or depressed? Maybe it’s a tough situation you’re in, or a constant battle against sin leaving you feeling defeated. Earlier this week, I finished the book of Jeremiah. The book ends on a very depressing note, with the people in exile, the temple destroyed, and the city left in ruin. I’ve now read through Lamentations, and the tone doesn’t get any brighter. This book records the grief and mourning over this great loss. Look at how it starts:
God makes it very clear why the nation is in this situation. He explains, “Jerusalem sinned grievously; therefore she became filthy; all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans and turns her face away” (Jeremiah 1:8 ESV). Sometimes, like Jerusalem, the hopeless situations we find ourselves in are of our own making. We’re to blame and we need to own that, confess it to the Lord, and ask for His cleansing and forgiveness. Other times, though, it is the sin of others, or simply the fallen state of our world. Either way, we often wonder if there’s any hope. The author of Lamentations wonders this same thing, “What can I say for you, to what compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your ruin is vast as the sea; who can heal you?” (Lamentations 2:13 ESV). The good news is that there is still one who can heal. There is a God we can hope in, no matter where we are, what we’ve done, or what we face. Right in the middle of this book of lament are some of the most hopeful verses in the entire Bible. They remind me that God isn’t done yet. He’s still at work in me, in you, and in our world. Today, remind yourself to hope in Him!
