Dear Church Family, Have you ever lived in someone else’s shadow? Usually, we think of that as a bad thing, but in Psalm 91, we find out that this can be a very good thing. Usually, when we think of that expression, we think of it as being overlooked or unnoticed, but here it means something entirely different.
This Psalm describes God’s protection, deliverance, and covering. As we go through life, it is important to know that we don’t go alone, but have a protector, deliverer, and refuge from the storms of life. The Psalms often speak of God as our “safe place” of shelter. This begs the question, “Where do you run to when the storms come?” The reason the psalmist finds himself in the shadow of the Almighty, is that he has sought shelter under His wing. When he looks up, he is underneath the Lord’s protective hand. I’m not sure what storms you are facing today, but you can find shade under the shelter of the Lord. One word stood out in verse one: abide. The best way to find shelter in the storm is to abide there before the storm. We often run to God when things get bad or when we’ve exhausted our other options. How much better would it be if we simply abided there all along? Isn’t that what Jesus calls us to do in John 15?
How do we abide in Him? The Lord describes this type of person at the end of Psalm 91. Let’s be those who hold fast to Him in love, know His name, and call on Him. Let us live in His shadow.
