Dear Church Family,

Would you consider yourself poor and needy? I’m not talking about your finances or health; I’m talking about your overall need for God in your life. I’ve been reading through Psalms in my devotions, and so many of them are filled with believers crying out to God. Why? Because they consider themselves poor and needy. Today, as I read Psalms 69 and 70, I noticed David’s repeated cries for help. As I read the last verse of chapter 70, it sunk in.

Psalm 70:5 (ESV)
But I am poor and needy;
hasten to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay!

Do I consider myself poor and needy? Do I realize how much I need God? The more we understand this, the more we will ask for help. I don’t know about you, but when I feel self-sufficient, I rarely ask for help. Could it be that the lack of depth in our prayer lives is directly related to an over-inflated sense of self? David didn’t just pray, he wore himself out in prayer. In Psalm 69, he acknowledges, “I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God” (Psalm 69:3 ESV). He knew he couldn’t save himself, so he put all his effort into calling on the only one who could.

Not only was David convinced of his need for help, but also that he had in God, a helper and deliverer who could handle any problem thrown His way. Do we have that confidence in God? Do we really believe that He can handle our problems? Could this be another reason we do not go to Him in prayer?

What problems do you face today? Which needs do you need to bring to God in prayer? Don’t face them alone. Remember, you are poor and needy, but He is your help and your deliverer.
