Dear Church Family,

It can be so disheartening to look out at the world and see wickedness seemingly triumph in the face of righteousness. We long for justice, but are often left with injustice. We know that God’s way is always right, but look out at so much wrong. We see this anguish in many of the psalms, as the writers wrestle with what they know and what they see and experience. Often, I can become discouraged by this reality, but today as I read Psalm 52, I noticed a strong defiance to evil in David’s words.

Psalm 52:1-4 (ESV)
Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?
The steadfast love of God endures all the day.
2 Your tongue plots destruction,
like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.
3 You love evil more than good,
and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
4 You love all words that devour,
O deceitful tongue.

He speaks of those who love and boast of evil and plot destruction. They lie, deceive, and devour. In the middle of this, though, David reminds them, “The steadfast love of God endures all the day.” I found that phrase, “all the day,” comforting. No matter what time it is, God’s steadfast love is present and enduring. No matter what is going on or how confident the wicked are, God’s steadfast love will outlast them, because it endures all the day.

David is confident that God’s loyal love will outlast all the wicked and every evil. Though they laugh now, “but God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah” (Psalm 52:5). May we have that same confidence in the face of evil. Let us remember that, if it’s not right, God’s not finished. With that confidence, we can patiently wait on God to work out His justice.

Psalm 52:9 (ESV)
I will thank you forever,
because you have done it.
I will wait for your name, for it is good,
in the presence of the godly.
