Dear Church Family,

Have you ever hit rock bottom? Where do you go from there? Today I read two psalms, Psalm 42 and Psalm 43, and both speak of a soul feeling cast down and in turmoil. These psalms, by the Sons of Korah, have a repeated, common refrain, found in 42:5-6a, 42:11, and finally, 43:5.

Psalm 43:5 (ESV)
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.

There are many reasons why our souls might be downcast. Sometimes, like the psalmist, we feel abandoned or rejected by God (43:2). Sometimes we face unmet expectations, extreme injustice, pain or loss, or ongoing difficult circumstances. Whatever the reason, it’s a difficult place to be. The first thing I noticed is that the psalmist had to talk to himself. Sometimes we have to do this; we must tell ourselves to hope in God; that even at rock bottom we will find a Rock on which we can stand. What truths do you need to remind yourself of today?

Another thing I noticed is that, during this difficult present, the psalmist looks both backward and forward. It hasn’t always been like this. He remembers the past times he would worship God from the bottom of his soul:

Psalm 42:4 (ESV)
These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
a multitude keeping festival.

He looks to the future, telling himself, “for I shall again praise him,” (Psalm 42:5, 42:11. 43:5). Whether in death or life, he knows that his present circumstances will not last forever. It won’t always be like this. What past praise or future hope can help you in the present?

Finally, the psalmist asks for God’s truth to lead him from where he is to where he should be. God’s truth shines light into the darkness of our circumstances and He will help lead us out.

Psalm 43:3-4 (ESV)
Send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling!
4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
O God, my God.
