Dear Church Family, What is the most well-known symbol of Christianity? You’d probably say, “The cross.” In Jesus’ day, it represented one of the most torturous and humiliating forms of execution possible. Death on a cross was the death that Jesus endured; it was the death that brought us peace with God and new life with Him. That is why this symbol is so important for believers in Christ. I’m going through the Gospel of Luke in my devotions, and today I came to the crucifixion. As I was reading, I stopped at verse 26, as Jesus was being led to the place of the crucifixion.
We don’t know much about Simon of Cyrene; Mark 15:21 tells us that he was the father of Alexander and Rufus. This probably indicates that he was or became a believer, since these names would be familiar to early believers, but we don’t know for sure. He was probably a devoted Jew, since he traveled to Jerusalem during an important feast. Whatever the case, he was chosen to help carry the very cross that Jesus died upon. As I was reading, I was reminded of Jesus’ words about following Him.
Just as Simon of Cyrene physically carried the cross, each of us is called to symbolically carry our cross. What does that mean? Why would Jesus use such a shocking phrase? Just like with Jesus, it means denying ourselves and choosing God’s will over our own. In the moment, that choice feels like death, but in reality, brings life. That is why Jesus says next, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it,” (Luke 9:24 ESV). When you see a cross, remember what Jesus did for you; He died on a cross to save you from your sins. But also remember His call for you; take up your cross and follow Him. What would that look like for you today? How can you deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus? How can you find greater life by dying to yourself and living for Him?
What’s Happening at Gospel Life:Gospel Youth Mario Kart Tournament: Our next summer event will be at the Bronleewes’ House on Sunday, July 12th from 5-7 pm. We will have dinner and a night of gaming. Women’s Book Study: We are going through the book “Loving God with All Your Mind” by Elizabeth George. Our next gathering will be Thursday, July 23rd at 6:30, and will be held at the Points’ home. Men’s Hike: Guys, we’d love you to join us on Saturday, July 25th, for a day of hiking, fellowship, and food. We’ll meet at Pastor Dave’s house at 8 am, and carpool up to Blue Lake, near Cascade. Bring water, hiking gear, snacks to share, and money for lunch afterword. We’ll have time together in the Word at the lake and hope to be back around 5 pm. The hike is around 1.7 miles with approx. 400 feet of elevation change. Opportunities to Serve: We’re looking for help with the welcome ministry.
