Dear Church Family, Do you have any fruit trees? We have peach and apple trees and I’m looking forward to picking and eating their fruit later this year. I love other kinds of fruit, but I know that they won’t magically appear on any of my trees. Peach trees only produce peaches and apple trees only produce apples. Jesus reminds us of this in Luke 6:
Jesus has something greater in mind than just physical fruit. He uses this analogy to remind us that what comes out of us reveals, to us and others, the condition of our hearts. What comes out in our speech and actions was first planted, and then grew, in our hearts. Look back at this week; what kind of heart assessment would you give based on your words and actions? Many times, we try to change our words and actions, but we never get to the root of the problem, the heart. What does your “fruit” reveal about your heart? When we see bad fruit, we really need to stop and evaluate our hearts. Have you stopped to evaluate your own heart? What can you do about that issue of the heart? In our backyard, we just pulled out a dead tree, and it has left a void. Now, we’re talking about what to plant there instead. The same is true of our hearts. We need to pull out the sinful heart condition that produced the bad fruit. Then, we need to plant something good there instead. How are you going to get to the root of your problem? What are you going to plant there instead?
