Dear Church Family, Have you ever heard something and then couldn’t remember it the next day? Sometimes I can’t remember things the next minute! It truly feels like things go in one ear and out the other. We know that it’s not enough to simply hear things. In fact, it’s not enough to even be able to retain those things; in the end, it’s what we do with what we hear. This Sunday we’re going to talk about the importance of applying the wisdom we learn to our lives. This morning, that truth was reinforced as I read in the Gospel of Luke.
In this chapter, Jesus had been teaching and healing. In the middle of this, some of the crowd questioned Him, while others responded with amazement. As this woman in the crowd exclaims that Jesus’ mother is “blessed” for having Him as her son, Jesus uses this word as a springboard to challenge the crowd. He teaches that the really “blessed” person is the one who heard and keeps the Word of God. This reminded me of a similar distinction Jesus made, when He taught the parable of the wise and foolish builders. Both the wise and the foolish man are compared to those who hear Jesus’ words. The distinction is that only the wise do them. I’m sure you have learned many truths from God’s Word. I’m sure you can recite them and explain them to others. But have you actually applied them to your life? Are you keeping them? It is only those who both hear the Word of God and keep it that are described as “blessed.” It’s very tempting to become information accumulators instead of wisdom appliers. When we do this, Scripture calls us fools. The truth does us absolutely no good unless we live it out. What truths do you still need to apply today? What wisdom hasn’t done anything in your life because you haven’t done anything with it? Maybe the bigger question is, “What is keeping you from applying that wisdom to your life?”
