Dear Church Family,

Have you ever overslept and missed an appointment? It’s a horrible feeling to wake up in a panic and realize that you missed out on something important. I was reading this morning in Luke 12, as Jesus warns His disciples of the importance of being ready for His return.

Luke 12:35-40 (ESV)
“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

It’s been nearly 2,000 years since Jesus uttered these words. Time has a way of lulling us to sleep, causing us to think, “He hasn’t returned in so many years; surely He won’t return any time soon.” As I was reading, though, several things stuck out to me. First, we must be ready, because we do not know the time. Jesus could return at any moment. The takeaway for me is that we should be in a constant state of ready since His return could be at any time. Are we ready, right now, for Christ’s return? Is there anything keeping us from being ready right now?

Second, there is work to be done while we’re waiting. Jesus left us here with a mission: Make disciples of all the nations. Are we busy doing our Master’s work, or are we distracted by other things? Jesus emphasized that we should stay dressed for action and keep our lamps burning. Later, He says, “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes” (Luke 12:43 ESV). What will the Lord find us doing, if He returns today?

Finally, there is reward for faithful service. In verse 44, Jesus concludes about those faithful servants, “Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions” (Luke 12:44 ESV). What kind of reward is in store for us? To me, the greatest reward is to hear from my Master, “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master” (Matthew 25:21 ESV). May we always be ready, busy doing the work of the Master, longing for and awaiting His return!

Revelation 22:20 (ESV)
He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
