Dear Church Family,

Have you ever had a friend by your side while going through something difficult? There’s something about it that is comforting. They don’t even have to say a word; it’s encouraging just to know that we’re not alone. Today I was reading in Acts 23 about Paul’s trial before the Jewish council. Even though he makes a strong case and they can find nothing wrong in him, the council turns violent. Look at how bad things get!

Acts 23:10 (ESV)
And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks.

Imagine yourself waiting alone in the barracks, knowing that an angry mob is waiting outside ready to tear you to pieces. I can’t imagine feeling more helpless and alone. I love what comes next.

Acts 23:11 (ESV)
The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”
Even though Paul appeared alone, the Lord Himself stood by him and strengthened him. This reminded me of verse four of Psalm 23, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

What difficulties are you facing today? It is good to know we have friends around us to support and strengthen us. The very best friend of all, the Lord Himself, promises to never leave us nor forsake us. Even when others fail, He will not. Sometimes it’s hard to feel His presence and know He is by our side. We are told to draw near to Him and He will draw near to us (James 4:8). When we draw near, though, we must cleanse our hands and purify our hearts, understanding the seriousness of our sin (vs. 8-9). We must also humble ourselves before Him (v. 10). We must also draw near to Him in faith (Heb. 11:6).

Do you need someone by your side today? Humble yourself before the Lord. Confess any sin and turn from it and towards God. Come to Him in faith, believing “that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Heb. 11:6b ESV). Cry out to Him again and again.

Lamentations 3:55-57 (ESV)
“I called on your name, O Lord,
from the depths of the pit;
56 you heard my plea, ‘Do not close
your ear to my cry for help!’
57 You came near when I called on you;
you said, ‘Do not fear!’
