Dear Church Family,

Have you ever stumbled over something in the dark? It’s not fun to step on Legos or trip over a box at night. Our senses, like vision, are so important for life. Today, I finished up the book of Acts and in this last chapter, Paul compares the Jews in Rome who reject Christ to those who lose their sense of sight and hearing. He quotes Isaiah 6:9-10, when God commissions the prophet to go to a people who will refuse his message. The message will be clear, but they will completely miss out on the important truth.

Acts 28:25-27 (ESV)
And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:
26 “ ‘Go to this people, and say,
“You will indeed hear but never understand,
and you will indeed see but never perceive.”
27 For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and with their ears they can barely hear,
and their eyes they have closed;
lest they should see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their heart
and turn, and I would heal them.’

As I read these verses, I immediately thought, “I never want my eyes, ears, and heart to become dull to the things of God.” Imagine having the truth right in front of you, but not have the sense to see, hear, and receive it. Right after condemning those Jews for their dullness to the truth, Paul makes this statement, “Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen” (Acts 28:28 ESV). There will be those who will hear that same truth and have ears to listen and respond.

How is your hearing? Are your ears open to the truth, even when it is hard to hear? How are your eyes? Are they ready to see what God wants to show you? How is your heart? Is it soft and moldable by God, or stiff and hardened? Is there anything keeping you from hearing, seeing, and taking to heart God’s Word? May we always have ears, eyes, and hearts open, ready, and sensitive to the things of God!

Proverbs 28:14 (ESV)
Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always,
but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.
