February 20, 2026

Dear Church Family,

Have you ever responded in an unexpected way? Have you laughed when you expected to cry or cried when you expected to laugh? Sometimes those responses feel strange, but they can have a very positive impact, both on us and those around us. I was reading today in Acts 16 about Paul and Silas praying and singing in prison in Philippi.

Acts 16:22-25 (ESV)
The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. 24 Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,

Paul and Silas faced several difficult circumstances. They had been lied about, beaten, and illegally thrown into jail. It was also late at night. Even so, at midnight they are praying and singing to God. This isn’t how we normally respond to things like these. Instead of sing, we typically complain. Instead of pray, we typically try to fix things ourselves. Even though prayer and praise don’t come easily, they can be incredibly powerful, both for us and those around us. They are both a choice we can make, even when we don’t feel like it. Today, no matter where you are, you have the choice.

Psalm 34:1 (ESV)
I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
