Dear Church Family,

Have you ever done something good that you know is right, and then faced criticism and pushback? Sometimes we’re taken back and surprised by this, but this is more the norm than we’d like to admit. Peter found this out in Acts 11, when he reported the amazing work God had done among the Gentiles.

Acts 11:1-3 (ESV)
Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, 3 “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

Peter had been sent by God to bring the Gospel to a Gentile named Cornelius. This calling was sure, as God both gave him and Cornelius separate visions. We might not think of it as remarkable, that Peter would be sent to a Gentile, but at this point in Acts, the Gospel spread had been mainly confined to the people of Israel. In fact, Peter had a hard time wrapping his mind around this, so God had to give him this vision three times.

So, when Peter returned with the amazing news of Cornelius and many more Gentiles coming to faith, being baptized, and receiving the Holy Spirit, it isn’t surprising that not everyone would be excited. Even though it was incredible news and clearly God’s plan, some criticized him and condemned his actions. This reminds me of the many times throughout Jesus’ ministry that He, too, received criticism for obeying His Father.

What does that mean for us? When it comes to obedience, we must always obey God and listen to His Word. Even when we obey it clearly and listen to Him fully, we too might face criticism. We must never make our decisions based on avoiding criticism. When we are criticized, we must be willing to graciously defend the truth. This is exactly what Peter does. Instead of attacking the complainers, “Peter began and explained it to them in order” (Acts 1:4 ESV). By the end of his explanation, “when they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life” (Acts 1:18 ESV). It would be great if our criticizers always responded this way, but many times they won’t. May we extend the same opportunity, though, that Peter did, and pray for God to work in their hearts.

Is there any way you have been reluctant to follow God due to fear of criticism? You know it is clear in God’s Word and you know the Spirit is nudging you forward, but you’re afraid of how people will react? Live for the audience of one and be willing to explain to those around you.
