 Dear Church Family,

Have you heard the saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover?” We’re often quick to judge and, sometimes we’re right, but we’re also wrong sometimes. As I’ve been reading through the book of Job, I’ve noticed how many wrong things Job’s friends accuse him of. Their flawed formula is that suffering = sin. Job is suffering because he has sinned. How do we bring flawed thinking into our relationships and judge situations before stopping to listen and understand? Look at God’s words to them near the end of the book.

Job 42:7-8 (ESV)
After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. 8 Now therefore take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.”

Even though they were convinced that they were in the right, God reveals that theirs’ were words of folly, and that Job was in the right, not them. This reminds of the wisdom of Proverbs.

Proverbs 18:13 (ESV)
If one gives an answer before he hears,
it is his folly and shame.

Which situations have you judged too quickly? Maybe you’ve jumped to a conclusion too quickly, and need to stop, listen, and pray. Even Jesus’ disciples struggled with this. One day in Jerusalem, they came upon a man blind from birth.

John 9:1-2 (ESV)
As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

They had the same problem as Job’s friend; suffering = sin. Look at Jesus’ response.

John 9:3 (ESV)
Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.

The next time you feel prone to judge a situation too quickly, stop and ask the following questions: 1) Is my judgment based on faulty thinking? 2) Have I taken the log out of my own eye? 3) Do I know all the information? 4) What is God hoping to accomplish here? 5) How can I best be an instrument of God in this situation?

What’s Happening at Gospel Life:

Christmas Eve Service: Join us as we celebrate our Savior’s birth as a church family on December 24th at 6 pm at Columbia High School (301 S Happy Valley Rd, Nampa, ID 83687). After the service we’ll have a short time of fellowship and snacks. You’re welcome to bring a snack to share.

Communion: We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper as part of our Sunday morning service on Sunday, December 28th. Through the ordinance of communion, we remember the sacrifice Jesus made to save us from our sins.

Read the Bible in a Year: Every year I present the challenge to the church of reading through the Bible in a year. The goal is knowing God more through His Word, not simply checking something off our list. If you read through the whole Bible this past year (or anticipate finishing by the 31st), we want to celebrate this with a special dinner. Please contact Pastor Dave in the next couple of weeks so we can place a date for the dinner. We’ll have the same challenge for this upcoming year. If you are looking for a reading plan, you can find one here:
https://biblereadingplangenerator.com/

Elder Affirmation Vote: We will be voting to affirm Kevin Borror and Ted Point to serve as elders, during the morning worship service on Sunday, January 4th. Please read 1 Timothy 3:1-7 & Titus 1:5-9 for elder qualifications.

Upcoming Dates: No Youth Group (Dec. 21st & 28th)

Life Groups: If you’re interested in joining a life group, we have several to choose from. You can check them out here:
