Dear Church Family,

How do you deal with heavy subjects, like the loss of a loved one, conflict at work, or dealing with a personal tragedy? Those aren’t things we typically get excited about or seek out, but are still important to work through. They often teach us important lessons and grow and stretch us in essential ways. I just started reading the book of Job, and it’s one that I wasn’t overly excited to start, but felt led to study. It’s a book I’ve read through a number of times and deals with some heavy subjects, like pain and suffering, and why God allows us to go through them. This week, as I read through the first two chapters, a few things stuck out that I wanted to share with you.

First, worship can happen at the most unexpected time. We often think of worship as what happens on Sunday mornings at church when we sing. But, all of life should be worship, and sometimes the most powerful worship happens in the most difficult places. Right after receiving the devastating news of the loss of his children, servants, and possessions, Job chooses to worship God. How can you worship God this week, both in the good and the bad, at the expected times and in the unexpected and difficult situations?

Job 1:20-21 (ESV)
Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Second, we shouldn’t always expect wisdom and sympathy from those close to us when we go through difficult times. After losing so much in chapter one, Job faces the additional difficulty of painful sores from head to toe. Instead of sympathy, Job received foolish advice from his wife. Don’t always expect good from those you love, but always stand for good, even when faced with tragedy.

Job 2:9-10 (ESV)
Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Third, sometimes the best thing you can do for a friend going through a tough time is to just sit with them in their pain. We often think of Job’s friends in a negative sense, and they surely don’t handle a lot right in the following chapters, but the first thing they do is very commendable. Who is going through a tough time right now? How can you sit with them?

Job 2:12-13 (ESV)
And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven. 13 And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.
