Dear Church Family,

Punchlines have a special way of punctuating a joke or story. In the same way, the final sentence of a book often has a way of hitting home and emphasizing an important truth. You think about that last line and what it means. Today I finished reading the book of Esther and the last verse hit home with me.

Esther 10:3 (ESV)
For Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was great among the Jews and popular with the multitude of his brothers, for he sought the welfare of his people and spoke peace to all his people.

God used Mordecai in a very powerful way in the history of God’s people. He is a powerful example of God humbling the proud and lifting up the humble and needy. The book ends with God’s blessing of Mordecai in exalting him. The thing that really stuck out to me was the “why,” which is explained by the word, “for.” It was because Mordecai “sought the welfare of his people and spoke peace to his people.” So many times, we’re only looking out for ourselves, but Mordecai was looking out for others. He sought peace for all his people. God blessed Mordecai because he sought the blessing of others.

Today, look out for others. In a world that tells you to think only of yourself, change the tune and think of others. Seek their welfare and speak peace to them. Who can you bless today? Who is in need today and how can you serve them? Remember Paul’s reminder in Philippians 2.

Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV)
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
