Dear Church Family,

Have you heard the phrase, “Don’t bury your head in the sand?” You do this when you don’t want to face a situation. Simply ignoring something doesn’t make it go away. In fact, it often makes it way worse than if we just faced the truth. In Jeremiah 36, King Jehoiakim does something even worse than ignoring the truth or burying his head in the sand, he tries to burn up the truth.

Jeremiah 36:1-3 (ESV)
In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

God gives these words in hope that the people will repent. Through a series of events, the scroll eventually makes it into the presence of King Jehoiakim. How would you respond if God’s Words, written on a scroll, were read in your presence? It’s shocking how he responds!

Jeremiah 36:22-25 (ESV)
It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. 25 Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.

You can ignore, or even burn up the truth, but you cannot make it go away. After Jehoiakim destroys the scroll, the chapter ends with Jeremiah having all the words written down again, but also many similar words added to them. God’s Word isn’t just restored, it expands!

Hiding from the truth doesn’t free you from its consequences. Jehoiakim didn’t escape by burning up the scroll. Actually, escape could have been found in humbling himself to the Word. This reminds me of another King, Josiah. During his reign, he had the temple restored after years of disrepair. During this time, the Book of the Law was found. When it was read to Josiah, he tore his robes. He humbled himself and made a covenant to walk after the Lord and keep His commandments.

How have you been responding to God’s Word? Are there any truths you’ve been trying to ignore? Any warnings you don’t want to hear or commands that you don’t want to obey? Don’t ignore the truth. Don’t bury your head in the sand, but humble yourself, and find life in His Word.

John 8:31-32 (ESV)
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
