Dear Church Family, Have you ever been so embarrassed that you blushed? This is a normal reaction when we find ourselves in an awkward situation. We’ve either done, said, heard, or seen something we shouldn’t have in front of someone else. What wouldn’t be normal, is if we didn’t blush, or at least feel like blushing, in that situation. That’s the situation Judah finds itself in Isaiah 6. I was reading this chapter this morning and verse 15 stuck out to me.
This chapter is about the upcoming judgment upon Jerusalem for the peoples’ continued sin against the Lord. He would soon send the Babylonians to take them away to captivity. It wasn’t because the Lord couldn’t protect them, but because they refused, again and again, to repent of their sins. They had hardened their hearts and refused to listen. One hallmark sign of a hardened heart is a lack of shame over sin. The people had sinned in horrible ways against the Lord, but were not ashamed at all. In fact, they did not know how to blush. This is an extreme place we never want to get! Not only are we entrenched in gross sin, but we are so desensitized to it that we aren’t even embarrassed by it. Is there any bit of that in you today? There are certain sins that we can allow into our lives and eventually become deadened to how disgusting and grotesque they truly are. We do not know how to blush. For you, maybe it’s sin in general, or maybe it’s a very specific sin that you have grown accustomed to. It’s bad place to be, but the good news is you don’t have to stay there.
