Dear Church Family,

Would you rather have someone flatter you with lies or hurt you with truth? Flattery feels good, but when it’s based on lies, it rings hollow. Truth can hurt, but when we take it to heart, it can also bring healing and growth. Sadly, hard truth often hurts, so we often opt for false flattery. I was reading Jeremiah 14 this morning and Jeremiah, in his prayer to Lord, complains about the false prophets speaking lies to the people.

Jeremiah 14:13-14 (ESV)
Then I said: “Ah, Lord God, behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’ ” 14 And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.

The people of Judah continued to sin against the Lord and God promised to bring in judgment through the Babylonians, if they refused to repent. This judgment was imminent, and the signs were all around them. Even so, these false prophets promised peace, safety, and provision. This is what the people wanted to hear, but this false assurance didn’t do them any good. In fact, it kept them from deliverance through repentance, and sealed their doom. Lies may make us feel good, ease our conscience, and feed our ego, but they become a huge barrier to our healing, growth, peace, and maturity.
Who are you listening to? Those who tell you the truth you need to hear, even if it hurts, or those who tell you the lies you want to hear? It is tempting to surround ourselves with voices that assuage our sinful selves. That’s the way of the world. May we be people who seek out truth, even if it is painful. It is the truth that sets us free, not the lie. May we also be people who speak the truth in love, sharing the right words at the right time in the right way.

Ephesians 4:15-16 (ESV)
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
