Dear Church Family, Have you ever been on a road trip and gone through an area with no cell coverage? Sometimes it’s just because there are no cell towers close by, but other times it’s caused by some obstruction, like a mountain or going through a canyon. It’s frustrating when something is blocking your communication! Sometimes it feels that way with God. It feels like our prayers go unanswered and we wonder if He is listening. It’s important, in times like this, not to trust our feelings. Often, when He feels the quietest to us, He is still listening, but doing something unexpected behind the scenes or in us. As I read Isaiah 59 this morning, I was reminded that there is one thing that blocks our communication with God.
God makes it clear that the problem isn’t on His end. His ears aren’t dull and He is mighty to save. When we hold on to unconfessed sin, it creates a barrier to our fellowship and communication with God. This chapter goes on to tell of the wickedness and injustice of the people. I find it shocking that they would be shocked that God wouldn’t hear their prayers while walking in sin. But, sadly, sometimes we do the same thing. We pretend like our sin isn’t a big deal and that it won’t hurt our relationship with God. Today, make sure there’s nothing between you and the Lord. Always keep short accounts with Him. As soon as you know you’ve sinned, confess it to Him. Remember, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 ESV). Whenever you feel like there might be something blocking your communication with Him, look within. The first prayer we should pray is one of repentance. It’s when we confess our sins that our fellowship is restored.
