Dear Church Family,

What comes to your mind when you think about God? I read Isaiah 40 today and, right in the middle of the chapter, Isaiah asks an important question. “To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?” (Isaiah 40:18 ESV) We often think about God’s power and might. Most of the chapter talks about His great power and majesty. I love this reminder about the great nations of the earth.

Isaiah 40:17 (ESV)
All the nations are as nothing before him,
they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.

God is so much greater than all of these nations, that they aren’t just called tiny or small, but less than nothing. God’s greatness goes way beyond even this, though! His control and power extends to all of creation. In verse 22 God is described as stretching out the heavens like a curtain and spreading them out like a tent to dwell in. Later, God asks this:

Isaiah 40:25-26 (ESV)
To whom then will you compare me,
that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
calling them all by name;
by the greatness of his might
and because he is strong in power,
not one is missing.

It’s clear that God is all-powerful and that nothing is outside of His control. In light of this, though, comes the question, “Does this amazing God care about me?” It’s a fitting question, because the universe is so big and we are so little. We are so undeserving of His care and love, especially because of how deeply we have sinned against this great God. That’s why I love this reminder, right in the middle of this amazing praise of God’s greatness.

Isaiah 40:11 (ESV)
He will tend his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms;
he will carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young.

The God of the universe loves you! Yes, He is great, but He is also a shepherd. He is all powerful, but He is also gentle and gathers His children and carries them close to His chest. Today, remember how much God cares for you!
