Dear Church Family,

There are usually multiple solutions to the various problems we face in life. Whether it is solving a problem in math or finding the best route on a map, we’re used to having several options to choose from. When it comes to us being restored into a right relationship with God, though, there was only one solution. On Good Friday we remember Christ’s sacrifice for our sins on the cross.

We’re reminded from Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane that there was no other way for us to be forgiven.

Matthew 26:36-39 (ESV)
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

We see the anguish Jesus faces as He nears the time appointed for Him to bear the sins of the world. In this moment, He asks the Father if there is any other way. Even so, He submits to the Father’s will. We know the answer that the Father gives. Isaiah 53:10 explains, “Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.” There was no other way. It was God’s will and His plan, even from eternity past (Eph. 3:11), to have His Son become the Savior of the World through His death on the cross. 1 Peter 3:18 tells us, “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.”
Maybe more amazing than the fact that there was only one way is the truth that there was a way at all. It is only because of God’s incredible love for us that He would make a way. There is nothing we have done that deserves anything other than punishment. He could have left us in our sins and remained completely holy and righteous. Yet He chose to send His Son. Jesus could have refused the cross, yet He obediently accepted not just death, but death on a cross, one of the horrific ways to die. Today, thank God for His love for you. Thank Jesus for going to the cross for you. How deep the Father’s love for us!

Ephesians 1:7-10 (ESV)
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
