Dear Church Family,

We live in a world of information overload. It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the news, counter news, rumors, and conspiracy theories. All of these have a habit of driving us to fear. Things weren’t that much different in Isaiah’s day. The nation of Judah faced threats from Syria and Israel and rumors of an Assyrian invasion. All of this drove King Ahaz and the rest of the people to fear.

Isaiah 7:2 (ESV)
When the house of David was told, “Syria is in league with Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

Sometimes we feel that way, too. Faced with unknowns, uncertainties, real and perceived threats, fears, and anxieties, we feel like trees shaken by the wind. I love what God says to Isaiah in the next chapter. Faced with the pending Assyrian invasion, God gives him these important words:

Isaiah 8:11-13 (ESV)
For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12 “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.”

It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the news and conspiracies around us and live in fear of all of them. God’s reminder is just as true today as it was in Isaiah’s day. We are to fear Him and Him alone. When we fear Him, we don’t have to be afraid of anything else. What things have you been in fear of lately? How have you let fear of those things keep you from fearing God? How can a proper view of Him help you face those things in faith? Today, let the Lord be your fear and let Him be your dread.

Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
