Dear Church Family,
As we approach Good Friday, we remember the good work that Jesus accomplished on the cross.  God, as only He can, takes a horrible act of rebellion, the killing of His only Son, to accomplish something miraculous and amazing.  Jesus became God’s Passover lamb for us (1 Cor. 5:7).
I encourage you to read Isaiah 53. Isaiah prophesied over 700 years before Jesus about the suffering servant who would bring us peace with God. I’ve included two sections of this profound chapter.

Isaiah 53:4-6 (ESV)
4    Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5    But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
6    All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah is clear that we are the ones at fault. We have wandered away like sheep. We rightly deserve the punishment for our sins. Yet it is Jesus who carries our griefs. He is the one pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities. Jesus loves us so much that He took, not only our sin, but the penalty that comes along with it. “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10 ESV).

Isaiah 53:10-11 (ESV)
10   Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11    Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.

Isaiah reminds us of the goodness accomplished on the cross. It is in the crushing, the grief, and the offering of guilt that God accomplishes the good. Even though Jesus is crushed, Isaiah speaks of the prolonging, the prospering, the satisfying, and accounting righteous. Let us thank God for His great love for us! “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 ESV).
