Dear Church Family,

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fortress to hide in from the difficulties of life? I’m reading through the Psalms right now and came to Psalm 18 this morning. David writes this Psalm as he reflects on how God delivered him from the hands of Saul and all his enemies. He starts by referring to God as just that; God is his fortress. Look at the other words he uses to describe God’s protection and deliverance.

Psalm 18:1-3 (ESV)
I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2      The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3    I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.

The rest of the Psalm goes into detail in how David cried out to God as the “cords of death encompassed” him (v. 3). If you have some time today, I encourage you to read this description of God’s work in David’s life. I also encourage you to think of your life and the “battles” you’re facing. In what ways do you need God to be your rock and fortress? David finds comfort as he cries out to God in prayer. He still faced these enemies, but found God, in tangible ways, to be his shield and stronghold. As you cry out to Him, remember these words in 1 Peter:

1 Peter 5:6-7 (ESV)
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
