Dear Church Family,

We need to be careful when we speak. Once the words are out, they can’t be taken back in! Growing up, one of my favorite Proverbs was 17:28:

Proverbs 17:28 (ESV)
Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.

This is a strong warning against careless or thoughtless speech. We really need to think about what we say before we open our mouths. Is it worth saying? Is this the right occasion? Is it even true? What are my motivations in saying it? Obviously, there is more to becoming wise than simply hold our tongues, but this can be a first step towards wisdom. In fact, when we’re not speaking, we’re a lot better at listening and learning from others. Just a few verses later, we’re shown this:

Proverbs 18:2 (ESV)
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing his opinion.

I can’t remember where I first heard this, but it humorously reinforces this truth: “Remember, God gave us two ears and only one mouth.” So, how are you at listening to others? Learning from them? At gaining understanding? Don’t just be ready to share your opinion, but think before you speak. Words can be very destructive, but they can also be incredibly healing when shared at the right time in the right way. I love this verse earlier in chapter 16:

Proverbs 16:24 (ESV)
Gracious words are like a honeycomb,
sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
